IEEE Engineering standards

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a professional nonprofit society that advocates the development of technologies that are related to electricity. The IEEE is the largest organization in the world of its kind, having the most members with currently more than 395,000 participating members around the globe in more than 150 countries.

Based in New York, US, The IEE was founded in 1963 by merging the IRE and the AIEE into one organization.

Creating standards for many types of engineering, The IEEE has several divisions set up for this purpose. The IEEE provides standards for Engineering in Medicine and Biology, Telecommunication technology, software engineering and many other areas.

The members of the IEEE consist out of electrical engineers, computer engineers, and computer scientists, but due to its broad area for developing standards, the organization also attracted engineers in other disciplines. In order to become a member, the applicant must meet the criteria. Those that cannot meet these criteria can apply for an Associate membership. Membership fees are reduced for students and the privileges for both members and student members are identical.

The IEEE partners with other organizations for developing engineering standards in various fields in order to broaden their scope. Being the leading standard developing organization the IEEE is viewed as a trusted source for certifying the engineering standards that are used today.
