IEEE LAN/MAN 802  Standards.

The so called LAN/MAN IEEE standards consist of the IEEE 802® standards. This also includes standards that are still being developed and older standards which are archived. New local and Metropolitan Area Networks standards are constantly being added as new standards are developed in response to the rapid technological developments and advancements in this area.

These standards are used internationally and basically cover all networks used for data transmission. The LAN/MAN 802 standards are used for developing networking technologies for use with both wired and wireless network interfaces of all types.

IEEE 802® standards work at the core of almost all means for data communication and assist in the assurance of reliability for delivering the packets that are transmitted from point to point and ensure compatibility of the networks. 

The 802 networking standards apply to all types of wired networks including coaxial cables, the classic copper wires that are used for regular DSL connections and telephony, and fiber optic cables which are a more recent development and used to deliver high speed connections. They also apply to all types of wireless data transmissions like radio transmissions for PANs for transmissions up to 10m, wireless LANs for transmissions up to 100m, and Mans for transmissions up to 1000m.

The most well known applications the IEEE 802® standards are used for are Token Ring, Ethernet and the Wireless LAN which are used for most common networks today. These types of networks are used in most common households for accessing the Internet, telephony, and even Television broadcasts.

These networks all fall under the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards in order to assure quality and reliability and still are under constant development.

The global use of the LAN/MAN IEEE standards ensures compatibility between different types of networks which is a must when transmitting data on a global level.
